UP Wildlife Rehabilitation - Keweenaw Group

"It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal." ~ Unknown

OCAP Assists in Wildlife Rescues

Though OCAP is licensed for only dogs and cats, we do get calls from concerned citizens about wildlife in need.  If we can’t respond, we will do our best to find someone who can, and it’s rare that we don’t show up in person to lend a hand.  Once rescued, depending on the species, we can find foster homes or hold the animal or reptile until we can find placement with a licensed rehabilitator, many times working with the DNR to coordinate transfer.

There are many rules and regulations that must be followed with even the smallest of animal and we must follow all MDNR mandates.  For example, we recently took in an injured Black Bird and before that, a Turkey Vulture.  Both are migratory birds and must be rehabbed by a licensed rehabber.  We have rescued 2 owls, one a Great Horned Owl and one a Northern Saw-Whet Owl – both injured on the highway.  These are considered raptors, and must be placed with a rehabber that is licensed for raptors.  We also took in 10 one week old bunnies whose mom birthed in a local day care’s sand box.  Because the day care was due to reopen the next morning, unfortunately the bunnies needed to be moved.  Mother hares only visit their babies a few times each day.  Other rescues have been a Turkey Vulture and a Pileated Woodpecker and various other birds.  All of which were transferred to a licensed rehabber.

In June of 2016, with the assistance of local good Samaritans, we captured the fawn pictured above and transferred it to UP Wildlife Rehabilitator – Keweenaw Group where it was given shelter and  regular feedings until release in the Fall of 2016.

Never move or disturb a fawn. Their mothers leave them for hours at a time and return throughout the day to care for them. If you are certain you have found an orphaned fawn, please call UP Wildlife Rehabbers.
