   Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue

"The world is a dangerous place, not because 0f those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."  ~ Albert Einstein
OCAP’s 2016 Pilot Program with Detroit Pit Crew allowed for 5 dogs to be transferred into OCAP from DPC as our space allowed.   Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue is an all breed, non profit, volunteer dog rescue operating without a shelter.  Think Pit Crew as in Nascar – not Pitbull.  DPC relies on foster homes and boarding facilities while they completely vet their dogs and send them to MI No-Kill shelters.  Unbeknownst to OCAP, DPC extensively researched us and because DPC liked what they saw and heard, they contacted us to see if we could help them help the destitute dogs of Detroit.  OCAP was the first shelter to join DPC’s Straight Outta Detroit initiative.

Detroit Pit Crew completely vets the dogs and screens them behaviorally and for health issues at DPC’s expense.  There is no cost to OCAP to have the dogs at our shelter.  What does that mean for OCAP?  They are among the few animals that we adopt out that we come out ahead financially from their adoption fee.  Those extra monies brought in by these dogs helps offset the cost of Ontonagon County dogs and cats.  An adoption of just one dog, covers the completion of vaccinations of two or three Ontonagon County dogs or cats, or it pays for the majority of the sterilization of one dog or cat, or it might pay for medications that many Ontonagon County animals might need.

Detroit Pit Crew goes above and beyond to care for their dogs, but it doesn’t stop with the dog.  In 2016, they accepted a surrendered dog from its owner who was down on his luck and had become homeless.  They treated the dog for medical conditions, and even found its owner a temporary home, as well as employment.  Eventually they were able to reunite dog and owner.  To date, DPC has rescued thousands of dogs with many of them being a part of the Straight Outta Detroit initiative going to Northern Michigan no-kill shelters.
