Did you find a dog that will fit your lifestyle throughout the dog's lifetime and you're interested in applying for adoption?  Complete an application ahead of time by downloading our application above and bring it with you when you visit OCAP.

There is no way to know in advance how a new pet will fit into a family. For this reason, there’s a three-week trial period before an adoption becomes final. This allows the animal and the family to adjust to one another. If it doesn’t feel right for all concerned - people, adopted pet, other animals in the household -  the animal may be returned for a full refund within that three-week period. After three weeks, the animal may be returned when space allows but without a refund. There’s no shame in returning an animal that doesn’t work out. Adoptions should be a source of joy for the family and the new pet. Anything less is unacceptable, and the best solution is to return the animal so it can find a more suitable home and the family can find the right pet for their circumstances.

Dog Adoption Criteria:
  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Provide identification (driver's license or State ID card) with current address.
  3. Ability to provide basic daily care and vetting annually and as needed.
  4. Provide consent of all adults in household or, if applicable, approval of landlord.
  5. Be willing to spend the time and money to provide for proper care of the pet.  This would include training, nutritional needs including food and water (not snow), appropriate indoor or outdoor shelter, medical care and annual vaccinations, and a license for dogs (per State law).
  6. All presently owned animals must have current vaccinations.
  7. Ability to provide a stable home environment free of abnormal stressors.
  8. Ability to accept that your dog is a life time commitment, not a temporary cute friend, and allow your dog to be your companion through the changes life can bring.  Your dog's home is by your side.
  9. Ability to provide the daily enrichment that a dog requires:  For example:  training, daily exercise, play time, and socialization.
